Description: The U.S. Census Bureau delineates urban areas as densely settled cores of census blocks to distinguish built-up landscapes from rural territories. Following the 2020 Census, the bureau updated its classification criteria to emphasize housing unit density rather than population density, while dropping the distinction between "Urbanized Areas" and "Urban Clusters". To qualify as an urban area, a territory must encompass a minimum population of at least 5,000 people, and at least 2,000 housing units.
Description: This layer is updated between census years only if small edits are needed because of road configurations. When new Urban Areas are released as a result from the decennial census, additional highway segments may be denoted as being included in the MS4 program. Once a highway is denoted as an urban area highway segment, it stays in the program, even if a subsequent Urban Area dataset shows it no longer being in an urban area. (See MS4 Urban Area Delineation feature.)
